"Other" in the film

These two films focus on the monstrous “Other” that needs to be eliminated from the society. Both the killers are terribly disfigured even though they are talented wax sculptors. Still, the society did not appreciate their talent nor giving them an opportunity to assimilate into the community. They have to wear a mask to cover up their true identity in order to fit in the society. However, I enjoy the remake in 2005 more since it provides the “other” a chance to be accepted into the society. When Carly is chased down by Vincent, she begs him not to kill her by persuading him that she understands his situation. This scene provides a second thought for the audience to view from the “other” perspective. Ironically, Carly still chooses to kill Vincent which means the society refuses to let the other be accepted. Still, I think it is interesting for the director to bring up the chance for the audience to experience and understand a monstrous other. Unlike the remake, the original one in 1953 kills Jarrod without leaving any conversation or hesitation for the audience to think from the perspective of otherness.

Camera as a weapon

Even though many people dislike the remake in 2005, I think the standard slasher film storyline still contains some interesting ideas in it. Another hidden message in the film is the motif of camera. Camera is carried by Dalton who films every details of their trip including the intimated behavior between the two couples. Every time camera appears, Carly and Paige seem to be annoyed since the camera captures image, especially female body. When these girls are being shot, they feel their territory is invaded. As Dalton is killed by Vincent, Vincent uses the camera to film Paige’s death. I find out it interesting because it reflects how the current society can be. Many people use camera to transgress other people’s territory and this kind of invasion can even harm them.
