Terms and Concepts

Slasher Film

  • Slasher film is a subgenre of horror film. The most popular and influential one is Alfred Hitchock's Psycho (1960) with its famous shower scene. Typically, it has a psycho killer using a penetrable weapon such as knife to brutally murder the victim. The film often happens at a Terrible Place where the killer can easily penetrate through the wall and evade the territory. In slasher film, if the teenagers have sexual desire for others, they are doomed to be killed since sex associated to death in this genre. Also, the directors enjoy utilizing I camera technique to let the audiences see through the character’s eyes, and sometimes these visions are cast from The Final Girl’s gaze. 

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

Final Girl

  • Final Girl is the only girl who survives and confronts to the killer. According Clover, “Viewer distinguishes her from her friends minutes into the film. She is the girl scout, the bookworm, the mechanic. Unlike her girlfriends, she is not sexually active” (Clover 204). Final girl is the logical and the tomboyish girl in the group, and she has the ability to detect the danger in the first place. She is empowered with slightly masculine characteristic since she is not completely a feminine character.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

Other

  •  Those who are not regulated are categorized by social order are defined as “Other”. They do not belong to the community since their existence is excluded from the society. In Lacanian psychology, Other is defined to be oppositive to the Self, relying on one another in order to define the ego of an individual. Formed in opposition to the subjective ‘I’. The Other is what is not belong to be part of ourselves. The Other sometimes transgresses the binary that will create fear to the society, and they need to be punished in order to maintain social order.

Abjection

  • Abjection is an ambivalent process that blurs the borders and breaks down division between orders and chaos. This process often creates uncomfortable feeling to people. According Creed, “abject things are those which highlight the 'fragility of the law' and which exist on the other side of the border which separates out the living subject from that which threatens its extinction” (Creed 48).

Jouissance

  • Jouissance is an experience that mixed with two opposite elements such as pleasure and pain. It involves a process of being a violent figure and painful passion. 

Mise-en-scene

  • mise-en-scène is an arrangement that involves costume, setting, and camera shots. It refers to how the characters and the visual background should be placed in order to let the audiences get into the story better.
